GE Cync vs. Eve Energy: Which Matter Smart Plug Fits Your Smart Home

Wi-Fi or Thread? How GE's Cync and Eve Energy Matter plugs differ on hubs and platforms.

AI-generated editorial illustration: two generic white smart plugs in a living room powering a lamp and a desk fan, with a small smart hub glowing on a shelf.

The skim

  • GE's Cync Indoor Smart Plug (Matter) connects over Wi-Fi. Its product page lists a built-in Wi-Fi bridge, so it connects without Thread.
  • Eve Energy (Matter) uses Thread and needs a hub that works as both a Matter controller and a Thread border router.
  • Apple Home needs a home hub for any Matter accessory. This comparison is based on maker documentation; we haven't tested either plug.

Wi-Fi vs. Thread

GE lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE for the plug. GE's page also lists a built-in Wi-Fi bridge. Eve says Eve Energy runs on Thread and needs a hub that is both a Matter controller and a Thread border router.

If you use Apple Home, Apple says you must set up a home hub to add any Matter accessory, Wi-Fi ones included. Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub: Apple's examples are the HomePod mini and the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. A supported third-party border router also works.

GE Cync Indoor Smart Plug (Matter)

  • Model: GE lists CPLGSTDBLW1MS/MSS1P, a 1-pack (UPC 043168566377). Older non-Matter Cync plugs share the name, so look for the Matter badge on the box, as GE advises.
  • Platforms: GE lists Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings and Apple Home, plus the Cync app on iOS and Android.
  • Limits: GE's spec page lists 120V and 1,800W, for indoor use. Follow the ratings and load-type limits printed on the plug and in its instructions.

Eve Energy (Matter)

  • Platforms: Eve lists Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant. The Eve app needs an iPhone/iPad (Apple Home) or Android (Google Home).
  • Features: Eve says Eve Energy has a built-in switch and energy-consumption tracking (availability varies by platform and app, per Eve), needs no Eve cloud, and relays traffic for other Thread devices as a router node.
  • Limits: Follow the ratings and load-type limits on the US plug's label and instructions.
  • Pack: Apple sells a 2-pack (SKU HQEQ2ZM/A).

Which fits

No Thread border router at home: GE's Wi-Fi plug avoids that requirement, though Apple Home still needs a home hub for Matter. Want Thread: Eve's plug needs a hub that is both a Matter controller and a Thread border router for your chosen platform. Eve says energy tracking depends on the platform and app you use.
