iFixit's iPhone Duo teardown points to a hinge stress spot behind cracked screens
iFixit gives Apple's foldable a provisional 5/10, the best for any foldable, and finds a possible cause for cracks. A new inner screen costs $999.
The skim
- iFixit tore down the iPhone Duo and gave it a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, the best score it has given any foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold got 4.
- On the cracked inner screens some owners are reporting, iFixit found that the damage clusters at a spot where several hinge parts meet. One theory is a center support that doesn't drop far enough when the phone closes. It hasn't confirmed a cause.
- Fixing the inner screen is still hard and expensive: $999 outside warranty. Swapping just its outer cover layer costs $49, or $19 with AppleCare+.
What iFixit found
Apple's first foldable went on sale Oct. 23 at $1,999, and within a day owners were posting photos of cracked inner screens. iFixit's teardown, published Sunday, is the first close look at why.
The failures people describe usually start with a noise while opening or closing the phone, followed by a line down the fold and a bright line across the display. iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from teardown footage, Apple's patents and CT scans, then compared it with photos of the damage. "The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support," it wrote. In its simulation of the phone closing, that center support bar "fails to drop far enough," and the folded screen comes down on it, creating a small stress hotspot near where the breaks show up. iFixit offers that as one possible answer, not a diagnosis. It also notes that a small fault in the display's wiring can light up a whole row or column of pixels, so the physical damage may be smaller than it looks.
Dust is the other weak spot. iFixit coated the Duo in fluorescent powder and worked it open and closed. Less powder got in than in its Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold tests, but enough reached the hinge to make it crunch. Cleaning the hinge means removing the folding screen.
The good news
Much of the phone is easy to work on by foldable standards. Both batteries (7.5 Wh and 11.6 Wh) use Apple's adhesive that lets go when you apply a small electric current, which iFixit called the best battery-removal experience it has seen in a foldable. The outer screen and inner trim came off intact, the internal layout is flat, and Apple published a repair manual on day one. The score is provisional because replacement parts aren't on sale yet.
iFixit also found how Apple hides the crease. The inner screen's matte nano-texture coating scatters reflections, and some subpixels are oval shapes pointed in different directions, which an Apple patent says reduces visible light patterns. Without the coating, iFixit says the crease is "arguably even more visible" than the Fold8's.
Why it matters
If you own a Duo, the inner screen is the part to protect. Out of warranty, it costs half as much as a new phone to replace. Owners who report cracks have been getting replacement units from Apple, iFixit says, and new buyers still have Apple's two-week return window. Apple did not immediately respond to The Verge's request for comment.
The bigger question is whether this is a design flaw or a small batch of bad units, and only Apple's return data can answer that. iFixit's advice to owners: "You'd better baby that screen."
