Gemini can now edit the Docs, PDFs and spreadsheets it makes, right in the chat
Expand a file, type changes or highlight a section and ask Gemini to fix it. PDFs work on web and mobile; other formats are web-only for now.
The skim
- The Gemini app can now preview and edit the files it creates, including PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, text files and code, without sending you to another app.
- You can expand a file to full screen and type changes yourself, highlight part of it and ask Gemini to change it, or just ask for a rewrite.
- It's rolling out to all Gemini users in every language the app supports. PDF editing works on web and mobile. Everything else is web-only for now.
What's new
Google announced the feature Thursday. Gemini could already generate files for you to download, a feature Google added earlier this year. What's new is that you can now change those files without leaving the app.
Now the file opens inside the chat. Google's example is a PDF study guide made from photos of handwritten lecture notes: you can edit the text directly, highlight one section and ask Gemini to rework the wording or the visuals, or ask questions about it. The Verge says you can also highlight a table and ask Gemini to turn it into a graph.
Google says it's available to all Gemini users. The split between platforms matters, though: PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile, while Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, text and code editing are only on the web for now.
Why it matters
This is Google pulling more of the work into the chatbot instead of into its office apps. You could already use Gemini inside Docs through the Gemini bar. This goes the other way, putting a lightweight editor inside Gemini. It also catches Gemini up with Anthropic, which, as The Verge notes, launched document and presentation editing in Claude chats earlier this year.
For students and office workers, it cuts out a lot of copy-and-paste. A one-page summary, a budget sheet or a short slide deck can go from prompt to finished file in one window. The usual caveat applies. Gemini can still get facts wrong, so check numbers and quotes before you send anything out.
What's next
Google hasn't said when the web-only formats will reach the mobile apps. The update is part of a busy week for Gemini, which also gained Gmail-powered autofill in Chrome on Wednesday.
