ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage limit starting in December
Plus, Pro and Business plans get one token-based allowance across ChatGPT and Codex. Instant chat won't count. Sizes and dates aren't out yet.
The skim
- Starting in December, Plus, Pro and Business subscribers will draw on one usage allowance for both ChatGPT and Codex, OpenAI says in a Help Center article.
- Usage will be measured in tokens, so bigger models and harder tasks burn through it faster. Instant chat won't count against it.
- OpenAI hasn't given a start date or allowance sizes, but says it expects most people won't hit resets more often than they do now.
What's changing
OpenAI is folding everyday ChatGPT use into the same meter that already governs its coding agent. "Starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans' usage allowance will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex as we bring the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience," reads a new OpenAI Help Center article.
The unit is the token, "the units of information a model processes and generates." OpenAI says how much of the allowance you use "will depend on the model you choose and the task you ask it to do," and that "more advanced models and complex tasks generally use more of your allowance." The one exception: "Instant chat will not draw from your usage."
Subscribers will see a single combined balance and reset times in Settings → Usage. Run out, and the options are to wait for the reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.
Part of this already exists
For anyone who uses Work or Codex today, the shared pool isn't new. OpenAI's guide to usage in Work and Codex already says the two "share the usage allowance included with your plan," and that the allowance "does not correspond to a fixed number of messages or tasks." Its Codex plan page adds ChatGPT for Excel and Workspace Agents to that same pool. What December changes is that regular ChatGPT conversations with anything other than Instant join it.
The model you pick matters a lot. OpenAI's own estimates for a five-hour window on Plus range from 5 to 45 local messages with GPT-6 Astra to 350 to 3,000 with GPT-6 Luna. Depending on the plan, both five-hour and weekly limits can apply, and OpenAI says Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex.
Why it matters
Today, a heavy Codex session and your regular ChatGPT chats mostly live in separate buckets. After the switch, a long agentic coding job could eat into what's left for a hard research question later in the day, and vice versa. The upside is flexibility: people who barely touch Codex can put more of their plan toward chat, and developers get one number to watch instead of several.
OpenAI is trying to head off the obvious worry. "We expect most users won't need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now," the article says. But without allowance sizes, there's no way yet to check that against your own habits.
What's next
OpenAI hasn't named a December date, published token allowances for any plan, or said whether the five-hour and weekly windows will change. The article doesn't mention Free, Go, Enterprise or Edu plans. Until the details arrive, the practical move is to open Settings → Usage now and get a feel for how fast your current work drains the pool, and to use Instant or lighter models for quick questions.
