## The skim

- Elon Musk says SpaceX has closed $40 billion of debt to buy GPUs, the chips that run AI. The chips arrive in the first half of 2027.
- In the same post, he said debt markets have "almost entirely shut off" money for AI data center companies without other big revenue, and that most of the 200+ "neoclouds" won't make it.
- Neocloud stocks CoreWeave, Nebius and Iren fell more than 4% in early premarket trading Monday before paring losses, CNBC reports.

## What Musk said

Musk made the claims on X on Sunday, [replying to investor Chamath Palihapitiya](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2114434646914068862?ref=skimwire.com), who had predicted a lot of "stranded" AI computing power in 2027\. "As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers," Musk wrote. "SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we're investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue. That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many."

In a [follow-up](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2114444535036321840?ref=skimwire.com), he said the deal is "primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2," and "not a major factor this quarter." When another user suggested he was trying to push neoclouds into accepting buyouts, he replied: "SpaceX is not buying any neoclouds. Pointless."

SpaceX hasn't published details such as the lenders or interest rate. Earlier, Bloomberg reported that SpaceX was in talks to raise $40 billion to buy Nvidia chips through a special purpose vehicle that would keep the debt off its balance sheet, with Goldman Sachs leading talks with investors including Apollo, [according to CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/26/spacex-closes-40-billion-debt-deal-for-ai-chips-elon-musk-.html?ref=skimwire.com).

## Why it matters

Neoclouds are companies that rent out AI computing power, usually Nvidia GPUs, often bought with borrowed money. Investors were already nervous. [CNBC reports](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/26/neocloud-stocks-today-coreweave-nebius-iren-elon-musk.html?ref=skimwire.com) that CoreWeave and Nebius are down more than 30% over the past month and Iren 40%, after the spread on CoreWeave's five-year credit default swaps hit levels generally seen as signs of distress.

Musk isn't a neutral observer. SpaceX runs its own data centers and sells computing capacity, so it competes directly with the neoclouds. Its AI business, which it calls "Super Intelligence," brought in $7.56 billion in third-quarter revenue, up from $813 million a year earlier, CNBC says. A shakeout among smaller rivals would help a company that can still borrow cheaply.

The other side disagrees. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC last week that demand for neoclouds is "off the charts" and the shortage of working capital is "going to get solved." Nebius's chief revenue officer said his company isn't "carrying the kind of debt" CoreWeave is.

The selloff came the same morning [Meta announced plans to raise up to $95 billion in stock](https://www.skimwire.com/meta-95-billion-stock-offering-ai-spending/) for its own AI buildout. That fits Musk's point: the money is still flowing, but most easily to companies with big businesses outside AI to back it up.

## What's next

Watch neocloud credit markets and any new financing from CoreWeave, Nebius and Iren. If Musk is right, 2027 brings sales, mergers or failures. If Huang is right, the capital catches up with demand.
