## The skim

- Oura has sued Ultrahuman in federal court in Texas. It wants damages and a permanent injunction to stop US sales of the Ring Pro, the redesign that brought Ultrahuman back to the American market this year.
- The suit asserts two patents that weren't part of the earlier fight, including one issued on Oct. 20, two days before Oura filed.
- For now nothing changes for buyers. "There is no court order affecting Ring Pro, and it remains available to customers in the U.S.," Ultrahuman CEO Mohit Kumar said.

## What happened

Oura filed the complaint Thursday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the company said in a [blog post](https://ouraring.com/blog/ultrahuman-patent-infringement/?ref=skimwire.com). It argues that Ultrahuman's redesigned ring "still incorporates many of Oura's patented innovations." The suit asserts design patent D804,471 and utility patent 12,769,363, [TechCrunch reports](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/22/oura-sues-rival-ultrahuman-again-threatening-its-u-s-smart-ring-comeback/?ref=skimwire.com). The newer patent covers a smart ring with internal parts such as a curved battery, circuit board, magnets and sensors.

Oura also named SVTronics, the Texas electronics maker that, according to the complaint, builds the Ring Pro at a facility in Plano under Ultrahuman's direction. The complaint alleges that both companies infringe Oura's patents by making, importing and selling the ring in the US.

## How we got here

The two companies have been fighting since 2023\. Oura won a ruling from the International Trade Commission in August 2025 that led to an import ban on Ultrahuman's Ring Air. Ultrahuman responded with the Ring Pro, launched in February, and in March won a favorable ruling from US Customs and Border Protection that cleared its return. Oura says that ruling covered only the patent from the earlier case, not the two in this suit.

Kumar isn't backing down. "Oura has now chosen to assert different patents, including one that issued just two days before this lawsuit was filed," he told TechCrunch. "We will address these claims through the appropriate legal process and will defend our position vigorously." The earlier dispute kept Ultrahuman out of the US for almost a year, [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/1017332/oura-is-suing-ultrahuman-all-over-again?ref=skimwire.com) notes.

## Why it matters

Patents are how Oura polices the smart-ring market. It has also brought infringement claims against Samsung, RingConn, Circular and Zepp Health, and RingConn and Circular now pay Oura royalties to keep selling their rings.

The prize is still small but growing. IDC expects global smart-ring shipments to rise 12.8% this year to 4.9 million units and reach about 6.3 million by 2030\. The stakes are uneven. Oura shelved a $2.2 billion IPO only weeks ago, while Ultrahuman raised $70 million in September at a valuation of about $365 million.

If you're shopping, the Ring Pro is on sale in the US today and nothing in this suit stops that. Still, the legal cloud is worth weighing, and our [smart ring comparison](https://www.skimwire.com/smart-rings-2026-oura-vs-ringconn-vs-samsung-galaxy-ring/) covers the alternatives.

## What's next

The key question is whether Oura asks the court for a preliminary injunction to pull the Ring Pro before trial. That would be the fastest way for this case to reach buyers. So far the filing seeks a permanent injunction and damages.
