## The skim

- Oracle and Google said Tuesday that Google's TPU AI chips will be offered on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure starting in 2027, the first time a hyperscale cloud outside Google will rent them out.
- Separately, OpenAI plans to buy Google's TPUs, The Information reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. Terms weren't disclosed, and OpenAI declined to comment to Reuters.
- Both point the same way: Nvidia's biggest customers are lining up a second source of AI chips, and Google is becoming a chip vendor. Alphabet reports earnings after the bell today.

## What Oracle and Google announced

At its AI World conference in Las Vegas, Oracle said customers will be able to choose Google's Tensor Processing Units inside OCI, with Oracle supplying the power, cooling and networking. [The joint announcement](https://www.oracle.com/news/announcement/ai-world-oracle-brings-google-tpus-to-oracle-cloud-infrastructure-2026-10-27/?ref=skimwire.com) names Google's eighth-generation chips: TPU 8t for training, which Google says delivers nearly 3x the compute per pod of the previous generation, and TPU 8i for inference and agent workloads. Availability starts in calendar 2027 and ramps over several years.

Oracle wouldn't say how big the first deployment is, but OCI senior vice president Karan Batta told [Data Center Dynamics](https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/oracle-will-offer-googles-tpu-ai-chip-via-oci/?ref=skimwire.com) it is a "multi-year, multi-gigawatt partnership with Google." He added: "This is not an experiment." The same day, Oracle and OpenAI [expanded their partnership](https://www.oracle.com/news/announcement/ai-world-oracle-reinvents-enterprise-computing-for-the-ai-era-with-openai-2026-10-27/?ref=skimwire.com) to bring Oracle's business apps into ChatGPT and power new Oracle products with OpenAI models and Codex.

## The OpenAI report

OpenAI is one of the largest buyers of Nvidia GPUs. According to The Information's report, it now plans to buy Google's TPUs too. Reuters followed up; OpenAI declined to comment and Google didn't immediately respond, [The Next Web reports](https://thenextweb.com/news/openai-google-tpu-chips?ref=skimwire.com). No price, volume or timing has been disclosed, so treat it as a plan, not a signed deal.

It fits a pattern. OpenAI said last week that its models are [coming to Google Cloud](https://www.skimwire.com/openai-models-google-cloud-model-garden/), and Reuters reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had begun renting Google's chips. OpenAI is also building its own chip with Broadcom.

## Why it matters

For most of the AI boom, "AI compute" has meant Nvidia. Google's chips were something you could only rent inside Google Cloud until April, when Google said it would sell TPU hardware directly to a small group of customers, according to [DCD](https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/oracle-will-offer-googles-tpu-ai-chip-via-oci/?ref=skimwire.com). Anthropic is already a big TPU customer, and its [IPO filing](https://www.skimwire.com/anthropic-s1-ipo-nasdaq-ant-founder-control-compute/) lists about $417 billion in new compute commitments, which shows the scale of what these labs are buying. If OpenAI joins it and Oracle's cloud resells the chips, Google becomes a real second supplier, and AI labs get some leverage on price.

Who's affected: Nvidia, which is also [investing in its own customers](https://www.skimwire.com/meta-prices-stock-sale-625-nvidia-3-billion/) to keep them close; Oracle, which can now offer two chip families; and Alphabet investors. Don't expect a quick revenue jump, though. Alphabet CFO Anat Ashkenazi has said only a small share of TPU sales revenue will be booked this year, with most coming in 2027, per The Next Web.

What's next: Alphabet's third-quarter results land after the market closes today. Listen for how much TPU demand Google is seeing outside its own data centers, and whether OpenAI comes up by name.
