## The skim

- OpenAI is using steep discounts to win AI coding customers away from Anthropic, and it's working, The Information reports.
- Replit moved most of its AI spending to OpenAI after getting more than 30% off a contract worth over $100 million a year, according to the report. At Rippling, OpenAI's share of engineers' coding work jumped from 16% in May to 52%, while Anthropic's fell from 57% to 18%.
- The price war comes as Anthropic prepares to go public, and it suggests that for many businesses, price now decides which model they use.

## What happened

In a report published Oct. 24 titled "Anthropic's Margin is OpenAI's Opportunity," [The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/anthropics-margin-openais-opportunity?ref=skimwire.com) detailed how OpenAI has been undercutting its rival on price for large business customers who use AI models to write software.

The most striking numbers come from Rippling, the HR software company. In May, Anthropic's models handled 57% of the coding work done by Rippling's hundreds of engineers, and OpenAI's handled 16%. Those shares have since flipped, with 52% now going to OpenAI and 18% to Anthropic, because Rippling wanted to cut costs and OpenAI proved cheaper, CEO Parker Conrad told the publication, [according to an excerpt syndicated by Benzinga](https://www.benzinga.com/content/62577789/anthropic-s-margin-openai-s-opportunity?ref=skimwire.com).

The report also says Replit, the AI coding platform, moved most of its AI spending to OpenAI after OpenAI offered more than 30% off a deal worth over $100 million a year, and after Anthropic ended a discount it had been giving Replit, [The Decoder](https://the-decoder.com/openai-offers-discounts-up-to-90-percent-to-poach-anthropics-biggest-customers/?ref=skimwire.com) and other outlets summarizing the story report. Online-learning company DataCamp was offered a 40% discount on the condition that it use OpenAI's Codex coding agent, according to those accounts. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has commented publicly on the figures.

## Why it matters

AI coding tools are big buyers of AI models, and they have been a core part of Anthropic's business. Replit CEO Amjad Masad said this month that Replit had been one of Anthropic's top five customers until recently. When he announced the switch onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt last week, he said, "It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance," [TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/17/replit-is-no-longer-working-with-anthropic-ceo-says/?ref=skimwire.com). Replit says its users can still choose Claude, but OpenAI is now the default, and most customers stick with the default, TechCrunch notes.

The bigger lesson is that for many companies, top AI models are becoming interchangeable enough that price decides. OpenAI, which is [raising about $30 billion](https://www.skimwire.com/openai-30-billion-raise-1-25-trillion-valuation/), is partly buying market share at the expense of its own margins, The Decoder notes. Anthropic, whose [draft IPO prospectus](https://www.skimwire.com/anthropic-draft-s1-ipo-revenue/) showed about 20% of revenue coming from two customers, has more to lose from a few big defections. And both face pressure from cheaper Chinese models such as [Moonshot's Kimi K3.1 Pro](https://www.skimwire.com/moonshot-kimi-k3-1-pro-open-weight-model/), which lists at $2 per million input tokens.

For developers and businesses, this is good news: it's a buyer's market, and it pays to ask your AI provider for a better deal or to test a rival.

## What's next

Watch for Anthropic's response, whether that's its own discounts or tighter terms for big customers. IFR reported last week that Anthropic plans to file its IPO paperwork publicly as soon as Oct. 26, and any public filing would show investors how much revenue comes from coding customers like these.
