## The skim

- Open-ear earbuds sit outside your ear canal instead of sealing it, so you can still hear traffic, coworkers and announcements. The trade-off is less bass, no noise blocking, and a struggle to compete with loud places.
- **Best clip-on:** Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen), $299, with 9-hour battery life and a wireless charging case.
- **Best value clip-on:** Baseus Inspire XC1, $149.99 at Baseus. They're Bose-tuned and rated IP66.
- **Best for workouts:** Shokz OpenFit 2, $179.95\. They have secure ear hooks, physical buttons and 11-hour battery life.
- **On a budget:** Soundcore V20i. They're basic but decent ear-hook buds for about $30.

## What "open-ear" actually means

Regular earbuds seal your ear canal with a silicone tip. Open-ear earbuds don't. They aim a small speaker at your ear from just outside it. You'll find three main designs:

- **Clip-on (cuff) buds** wrap around the edge of your ear like an ear cuff. Examples include the Bose Ultra Open, Baseus Inspire XC1 and Sony LinkBuds Clip. They're small and easy to wear with glasses.
- **Ear-hook buds** loop over the top of your ear, like the Shokz OpenFit 2 and Soundcore V20i. They're usually the most secure for running and the gym.
- **"Open" in-ear buds** sit loosely inside the ear without a seal. Examples are the Sony LinkBuds Open and Apple's AirPods 4\. The AirPods 4 cost $129, or $179 with active noise canceling, which CNET says [actually works](https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/best-open-wireless-earbuds/?ref=skimwire.com) on an open design.

Bone-conduction headphones are a different technology. They send vibrations through your cheekbones instead of playing sound into the ear. Open-ear buds generally sound fuller.

## Who they're for, and who should skip them

**Good for:** runners and cyclists who need to hear what's around them, office workers who want music without missing a colleague, and anyone who finds ear tips uncomfortable.

**Skip them if:** you mostly listen on trains, planes or busy streets, or you want deep bass. In noisy places, open buds tempt you to turn the volume up. SoundGuys [warns](https://www.soundguys.com/bose-ultra-open-earbuds-2nd-gen-review-164060/?ref=skimwire.com) that's how you risk noise-induced hearing loss. Noise-canceling earbuds are the better tool for loud commutes.

## Best clip-on: Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen)

Bose's original Ultra Open helped make clip-on buds popular. The [second generation](https://www.theverge.com/tech/996341/bose-ultra-open-earbuds-second-gen-wireless-sport?ref=skimwire.com) came out on Oct. 1 at the same $299 price, with:

- a new driver for more bass and volume
- battery life up from 7 to 9 hours (plus 19.5 hours from the case)
- a case that stands upright on a wireless charger.

SoundGuys measured [13 hours and 1 minute](https://www.soundguys.com/bose-ultra-open-earbuds-2nd-gen-review-164060/?ref=skimwire.com) in its standard battery test. It also confirms multipoint pairing and aptX Adaptive support for compatible Android phones. Gizmodo's review headline calls them ["The King of Clip-Ons Is Re-Crowned."](https://gizmodo.com/bose-ultra-open-earbuds-2nd-gen-review-2000823557?ref=skimwire.com)

**Watch out for:**

- **Calls in noise and wind.** SoundGuys found call quality fell apart in noisy and windy conditions.
- **Auto Volume can overcorrect** and jump to uncomfortably loud levels.
- **Battery drops to about 5 hours** in Bose's spatial Immersive Audio or new Cinema Mode.
- **The price.** If $299 is too much, Bose's new Sport Open Earbuds cost $199\. They have a grippier fit, 7 hours of battery and 22 more from a wireless charging case.

## Best value clip-on: Baseus Inspire XC1

CNET calls the Inspire XC1 ["the best value for clip-on style open buds."](https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/best-open-wireless-earbuds/?ref=skimwire.com) Baseus lists them at [$149.99](https://www.baseus.com/products/inspire-xc1-open-ear-true-wireless-earbuds?ref=skimwire.com), and Amazon had them for $109.99 on Oct. 21\. What you get:

- "Sound by Bose" tuning and a two-driver design with a Knowles balanced-armature tweeter
- 8 hours per charge (40 with the case)
- multipoint pairing and LDAC for Android phones
- an IP66 rating on the earbuds, so rain and sweat aren't a worry.

**Watch out for:** CNET noticed some distortion at high volumes, and there are no ear-detection sensors to pause music when you take them off.

**Buy:** [Baseus Inspire XC1 on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FMRPKN3G?tag=techtalkwithj-20&ref=skimwire.com)

## Best for workouts: Shokz OpenFit 2

Ear-hook buds stay put better than clips when you're running hard. The [OpenFit 2](https://shokz.com/products/openfit-2?ref=skimwire.com) ($179.95) have:

- a soft silicone hook and a 9.4 g weight per bud
- 11 hours per charge (48 with the case)
- an IP55 rating for sweat and light rain
- multipoint pairing
- a physical button on each bud, so sweat doesn't trigger accidental touches.

CNET puts them near the top of its list for runners. It says the OpenFit 2+ adds wireless charging and a Dolby Atmos mode for $20 more, and isn't sure that's worth it.

**Buy:** [Shokz OpenFit 2 on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DN11MTZ6?tag=techtalkwithj-20&ref=skimwire.com)

## Also great: Sony LinkBuds Clip

Sony's clip-on buds ([$229.99](https://electronics.sony.com/audio/headphones/truly-wireless-earbuds/p/wflc900-b?ref=skimwire.com)) give you:

- 9 hours per charge (37 with the case)
- an IPX4 rating
- multipoint pairing
- three listening modes, including Voice Boost and a Sound Leakage Reduction mode so people nearby hear less.

Reviewers disagree on calls: CNET rated voice-calling ["excellent,"](https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/best-open-wireless-earbuds/?ref=skimwire.com) while Rolling Stone's tester [found it subpar](https://www.rollingstone.com/product-recommendations/tech/best-open-ear-earbuds-headphones-1235172805/?ref=skimwire.com). The case doesn't support wireless charging.

## On a budget: Soundcore V20i

If you just want to try open-ear audio, Anker's [Soundcore V20i](https://www.soundcore.com/products/soundcore-v20i?ref=skimwire.com) are an inexpensive way in. They have adjustable ear hooks, 8 hours of battery (36 with the case), an IP55 rating and multipoint pairing. CNET says they fit securely and sound "decent enough for open buds," though they lack some bass and clarity. Its verdict: at around $30 they're easy to recommend, as long as your expectations are modest.

## Coming soon

Samsung's first open-ear buds, the [Galaxy Buds On](https://www.skimwire.com/samsung-galaxy-buds-on-open-ear-earbuds/), go on sale in South Korea on Oct. 27\. Samsung hasn't announced U.S. pricing or availability.

## How to choose

- **Fit style:** choose ear hooks for running and the gym, and clip-ons for all-day wear and glasses.
- **Water rating:** IPX4 handles sweat and light rain. IP55 and higher add dust protection and handle more water.
- **Controls:** physical buttons beat touch panels with sweaty fingers.
- **Your phone:** LDAC and aptX Adaptive only help on compatible Android phones. iPhones use AAC.
- **Return policy:** ears vary a lot, so buy from a store that makes returns easy.
