# Meta's Quest 2 and Quest Pro get their last new features with v2.13. Here's what still works

## The skim

- Meta says software version v2.13 will be the last update with new features for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It starts rolling out in January 2027 and should reach every headset by March 2027.
- Your headset keeps working. Meta says the Store stays open, your purchased apps keep running, cross-play with Quest 3 and 3S continues and PC VR through Link still works.
- Security patches and critical bug fixes continue through December 2027\. After that, new apps can't be submitted for these headsets.

## What happened

Meta posted a [support page](https://www.meta.com/help/quest/1587159486071016/?ref=skimwire.com) and a [developer blog post](https://developers.meta.com/vr/blog/meta-quest-2-quest-pro-end-of-feature-development-what-to-know/?ref=skimwire.com) laying out the end of the road for its two older headsets. Feature development ends with v2.13\. Any new system features, platform tools and APIs after that will only come to the Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer devices.

The timeline has three dates that matter:

- **January to March 2027:** v2.13, the final OS release, rolls out to all Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets.
- **Through December 2027:** Meta keeps shipping security patches and critical bug fixes. The developer blog says these will come quarterly.
- **December 2027:** the last security patch, and the last chance for developers to submit new apps that support these headsets.

Developers can keep updating apps they've already released. Meta's own app policies also require at least 180 days' notice to customers before a developer ends support in a way that cuts off access to content.

## What stays the same

Meta is clear that nothing gets switched off. "Apps and games on Quest 2 and Quest Pro keep working, solo and multiplayer alike," the developer blog says. "The Store stays open on these devices, people keep access to everything they've purchased, and no apps will be removed from the Store because of this change." Multiplayer between Quest 2, Quest Pro and Quest 3 or 3S stays supported, and PC VR through Link continues to work.

## Why it matters

The Quest 2 was the headset that brought VR to the mainstream. [heise](https://www.heise.de/en/news/Meta-Quest-2-Meta-ends-development-of-new-system-features-11508933.html?ref=skimwire.com) estimates it sold more than 20 million units after launching in October 2020, and Meta stopped selling it in 2024\. A lot of those headsets are still in closets and living rooms.

For owners, the practical change is slow. Your games keep running. But new games will increasingly skip the Quest 2, and after December 2027 you'll no longer get security fixes. That matters for a device that's signed in to your Meta account and connected to your Wi-Fi.

Meta is clearing the deck for [Meta VR Glasses](https://developers.meta.com/vr/blog/meta-quest-2-quest-pro-end-of-feature-development-what-to-know/?ref=skimwire.com), which it says launch next spring on the same OS as the Quest 3\. If you're thinking of upgrading, the Quest 3S is the cheaper of the two current Quest headsets that will keep getting new features.
