## The skim

- Within a day of launch, some iPhone Duo owners are reporting inner screens that crack along the hinge, including one who says it broke after fewer than 20 opens. Nobody yet knows how widespread the problem is.
- Separately, YouTuber JerryRigEverything says the $1,999 foldable failed his durability test: dust got into the hinge so it wouldn't close, and a bend test killed the inner screen.
- If you bought one, you have a two-week return window and Apple's one-year warranty, and one owner who reported a crack says Apple replaced it right away.

## What happened

Apple's first foldable went on sale Friday, Oct. 23, starting at $1,999\. Within hours, photos of broken inner displays began appearing on Reddit and the MacRumors forums, [MacRumors reports](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/23/iphone-duo-screen-cracks/?ref=skimwire.com). Almost all of the faults run along the hinge, and most show up as a line of bright pixels down one side of the screen.

One owner in Australia wrote that he had the phone "for about six hours and had probably opened it fewer than 20 times" when, while opening it for a friend, "I heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge." He says there were no marks on the screen or hinge beforehand, and an Apple Store replaced the phone right away. Other photos show broken demo units in China, where the Duo launched hours earlier, but their backstory is unknown and user damage may be involved. Some reviewers ran folding tests on early units with no problems.

## The durability test

On Saturday, Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything published his usual scratch, dust and bend tests. The outer screen, covered in Ceramic Shield 2, scratched at level 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. The flexible inner screen scratched at level 2 and took marks from fingernails, though Nelson credited its matte nano-texture coating for hiding them, [according to MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/24/iphone-duo-fails-jerryrigeverything-test/?ref=skimwire.com).

The bigger problems came next. Apple rates the Duo IP68 for dust and water, but after Nelson covered it in dust and dirt, debris worked into the hinge and the magnets could no longer hold the phone shut. His bend test then left a permanent green line across the inner display, and a second attempt added two more, [Dexerto reports](https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/apples-iphone-duo-fails-jerryrigeverythings-durability-test-3421515/?ref=skimwire.com). By the end, the inner screen stopped responding, and Nelson pointed to a roughly $1,000 cost to replace it. "I've been testing these folding phones since the first generation seven years ago – most do survive," he said. "The iPhone Duo did not."

His tests are deliberately harsher than everyday use, and one unit says nothing about failure rates. He also couldn't tell whether the dust or the hinge's flex caused the screen to die.

## Why it matters

Apple [pitched the Duo](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/10/open-up-to-new-possibilities-with-iphone-duo/?ref=skimwire.com) as "built to last," with a "precision-engineered hinge." Every foldable maker has faced early durability scares, and Samsung's first Galaxy Fold was famously delayed after review units broke. With Apple's huge user base and a $1,999 price, even a small failure rate means a lot of unhappy owners. For now, the evidence is a handful of user reports and one torture test, not a confirmed defect.

If you have a Duo, keep it away from sand and gritty pockets, don't press on the screen while it's unfolded, and consider AppleCare+, which covers accidental damage. MacRumors notes that hinge failures from normal use should fall under the one-year warranty, and new buyers have two weeks to return it.

## What's next

Watch whether reports keep growing as more phones ship, and whether Apple says anything about them. Early repair data and teardowns over the next few weeks should show whether this is launch-day noise or a real pattern.
