## The skim

- Google DeepMind announced Genie 4, a world model that generates explorable, photorealistic scenes in real time, now with its own sound, music and spoken dialogue.
- You can steer a running simulation with plain-language prompts, such as changing the weather or adding a person, and scenes stay consistent for about two minutes, double Genie 3.
- It's a research preview for trusted testers for now. Google AI Ultra subscribers and some Gemini API developers are next, with a waitlist open.

## What's new

A world model doesn't just render a video clip. It simulates a place you can move through, predicting what happens next as you act. [Genie 4](https://deepmind.google/blog/genie-4-a-new-generation-of-world-simulation/?ref=skimwire.com) is DeepMind's fourth version, and the company lists four upgrades.

**Realism.** DeepMind says Genie 4 handles physics such as aerodynamics and collisions better, and that its biggest leap is people, who now "move naturally" and can be steered in real time.

**Live editing.** While a world runs, you can type a prompt to change the weather, move the camera or drop in a new object or character. Gemini rewrites the request to fit the scene and keeps nudging the simulation so it stays coherent between your inputs. Google says Gemini Omni anchors how things look and behave, while other Gemini models handle the reasoning.

**Audio.** This is DeepMind's first real-time world model to generate sound natively, from wind and waves to music and characters who talk back.

**Length.** Scenes hold together for up to about two minutes, up from one minute with Genie 3, according to [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1019076/google-genie-4-ai-model?ref=skimwire.com) and [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/27/googles-genie-4-world-model-adds-audio-more-realistic-worlds-and-real-time-steering/?ref=skimwire.com).

## Why it matters

Google pitches Genie 4 at filmmakers storyboarding scenes, game designers testing ideas and, most of all, robotics. A simulated world can produce endless practice scenarios for robots and AI agents without anyone touching real hardware. DeepMind calls world simulation "a crucial aspect of building AGI." In one experiment described to TechCrunch, a Gemini model broke a robot task into steps and Genie 4 simulated each step live.

The field is getting crowded. TechCrunch notes Runway's GWM Worlds 2 and a wave of deals: AMD is buying Fei-Fei Li's World Labs, and Rivian bought simulation startup Third Dimension for self-driving tests. Genie 4 is Google's bid to stay ahead on realism.

Google is also clear about the weak spots. Details and objects can "shift or drift over time," especially in longer sessions or after several prompt edits. The model can't recreate real places with perfect accuracy, and it struggles with legible text and accurate audio. DeepMind engineer Diego Rivas stressed in a briefing that it's early days and that the end product isn't settled yet, TechCrunch reports.

## What's next

Google says Genie 4 is coming soon to Project Genie for Google AI Ultra subscribers and to early-access partners of the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. TechCrunch says that rollout is expected in the coming weeks.
