## The skim

- The Browser Company will shut down Arc on December 22, 2026\. As of today, October 22, nobody can create a new Arc account.
- On November 23, Arc Search on iOS and Android loses its AI features, sign-in and sync. On December 22, Arc for Mac and Windows stops working and accounts are deactivated.
- The company wants Arc users to move to Dia, its AI browser, which imports Arc's Spaces, pinned tabs, folders, passwords and extensions. Anything you don't move or export by then is gone.

## What happened

"We've decided to sunset Arc on December 22, 2026," The Browser Company wrote on [arc.net](https://arc.net/?ref=skimwire.com) today. "That's not an easy sentence to write." The reason it gives is security: "Keeping a browser secure takes constant, dedicated work that is only increasing in the age of AI." Its engineers and its whole security team are moving to Dia, which the company says "was built from the ground up to meet today's security standards."

The shutdown comes in three steps, according to the company's [help center timeline](https://resources.arc.net/hc/en-us/articles/44412972248471-Arc-Sunset-Key-Dates-and-What-to-Expect?ref=skimwire.com):

- **October 22:** no new Arc accounts. Existing users can keep browsing, and the latest Arc update adds an option to export all of your data.
- **November 23:** Arc Search on iOS and Android turns off Browse for Me and its other AI features, and you can no longer sign in or sync tabs. The desktop app starts showing reminders about the shutdown.
- **December 22:** Arc for macOS and Windows stops working, all Arc accounts are deactivated, and account data is deleted within 30 days. Arc Search for Android is pulled from Google Play and removed from devices. Arc Search for iOS keeps working as a basic browser.

December 15 is the last day to ask for a copy of your Arc account data or ask the company to delete it. That copy covers account details and usage records, not the history and passwords stored on your own computer.

## Why it matters

Arc was the browser that made vertical tabs, Spaces and a tidy sidebar feel normal, and many of those ideas have since spread to other browsers. But the company stopped building new Arc features last year to focus on Dia, which it first offered to Arc members in June 2025\. Atlassian then bought The Browser Company for $610 million, [The Verge notes](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1016832/arc-browser-shutting-down?ref=skimwire.com). Since then Arc has only received basic updates and fixes. Now it has an end date.

The bigger lesson is the security point. A browser is one of the most exposed apps on any computer, it needs constant patching, and the company is saying plainly that it won't keep two of them secure at once as the work grows "in the age of AI."

## What to do now

If you want to stay with the same team, download Dia (free for Mac and Windows) and pick Arc when it asks where to import from. The company says Dia brings over passwords, history, bookmarks, extensions, Spaces (now called Profiles), pinned tabs and folders (now Tab Groups), and that the AI is optional. If you'd rather go elsewhere, open Arc's Settings, go to Advanced and choose Export Data to save your Spaces and tabs as a list of links. Do the same on your phone in Arc Search's settings. The Zen browser is a frequent pick for people who want an Arc-like layout, [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1016832/arc-browser-shutting-down?ref=skimwire.com) says. Whichever way you go, do it well before December 22\. After that, Arc won't open and your local data in it can't be reached.
