## The skim

- Apple announced its first touchscreen Mac on Wednesday: the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, a 14- or 16-inch laptop with a tandem OLED screen, M5 Pro or M5 Max chips and a Dynamic Island in place of the notch.
- It starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch and $3,399 for the 16-inch. Preorders are open now and it arrives Friday, Nov. 6.
- Early hands-ons say the screen is the star and the 14-inch at 3 pounds feels much lighter. Touch is useful but not a revolution, and there's no Apple Pencil support.

## What Apple announced

For more than a decade Apple refused to put a touchscreen on a Mac. Steve Jobs famously called touchscreen laptops "ergonomically terrible," [as The Verge recalls](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1020549/macbook-studio-touchscreen-hands-on?ref=skimwire.com). That changed at Apple's "Pro and Tell" event in Los Angeles, which landed on the day [Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had predicted](https://www.skimwire.com/apple-touchscreen-oled-macbook-pro-wednesday-gurman/).

The new screen is a tandem OLED panel, the two-layer screen tech Apple put in the 2024 iPad Pro. Apple [quotes](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/10/apple-unveils-groundbreaking-macbook-pro-with-proled-xdr-display/?ref=skimwire.com) up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness for both HDR and SDR, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz, and color coverage of both P3 and Adobe RGB. The touch sensor is built into the panel rather than layered on top, and a redesigned hinge is meant to keep the screen steady when you poke it. A nano-texture glass option is available.

You can scroll, pinch to zoom, drag slides between presentations, and double-tap a window to fill the screen. Apps that weren't built for touch still work because macOS turns taps into clicks. Apple names Notion, Canva, Zoom, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve and Blender among third-party apps adding touch support, though its fine print says those listed apps arrive "later this year." The Dynamic Island now holds Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. Spotlight only moves there if Siri AI is turned on.

The rest of the spec sheet: up to 128GB of memory and 16TB of storage, up to 24 hours of battery life, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. The 14-inch weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less than before. The 16-inch is 4 pounds, 0.7 pounds lighter.

## Why it matters

Touch is the biggest change to how you use a Mac in years. Apple's chief hardware officer Johny Srouji called it "a monumental step forward for the Mac." First impressions are warmer on the screen than on touch. Engadget's Nathan Ingraham [called the display](https://www.engadget.com/2300023/apples-first-touchscreen-macbook-pro-feels-both-familiar-and-radically-improved/?ref=skimwire.com) the nicest he's seen on an Apple device, but noted occasional stutters when switching Spaces by touch, which he partly put down to being new to it. The Verge found that "you can make it wobble pretty easily with some firm taps toward the top of the screen" and said the lack of Pencil support "seems like a huge missed opportunity."

Then there's the price. The OLED models cost $400 more than comparable non-touch M5 Pro MacBook Pros, both outlets note. The 14-inch starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399\. With M5 Max, they start at $4,499 and $4,799\. Gurman had predicted increases of up to $500\. If you don't need OLED or touch, Apple's [M6 14-inch MacBook Pro](https://www.skimwire.com/apple-m6-macbook-pro-14-imac-prices-preorders/) starts at $1,999 and also ships Nov. 6.

## What's next

Orders are open in 30 countries and regions, including the U.S., and the first units arrive Nov. 6\. Full reviews should follow around then, and they'll show whether touch is a real feature or a novelty. Apple's own creative apps get their touch features this November: Creator Studio updates for Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro add on-screen editing, a playable keyboard and drawing.
