## The skim

- Anduril and Qualcomm unveiled BlueChip, a rugged Snapdragon X laptop designed and assembled in the U.S., aimed at government, defense and first responders.
- U.S. and allied suppliers make up more than 90% of the prototypes' component cost. Some parts, including the display panel, still come only from China, Palmer Luckey says.
- Orders open in 2027\. There's no price yet, but Luckey estimates it will cost about 20% more than a typical high-end PC.

## What happened

Defense-tech company Anduril and Qualcomm [announced BlueChip](https://www.anduril.com/news/anduril-and-qualcomm-unveil-bluechip-to-rebuild-american-computer-manufacturing?ref=skimwire.com) on Tuesday, a product line meant to rebuild computer manufacturing in America. The first device is a hardened laptop built around Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Series chips. Anduril says it already has working prototypes and plans to start taking orders in 2027.

Circuit boards will be assembled at Anduril's Arsenal-1 factory in Ohio. Much of the engineering is about American supply rather than features: enclosures designed for U.S. machining, battery systems built around existing American battery technology, and a bonding process for U.S.-made display glass. The Snapdragon chip will be made at TSMC's Arizona plant, [TechCrunch reports](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/27/anduril-qualcomm-launch-bluechip-a-new-kind-of-us-made-laptop/?ref=skimwire.com), and buyers will be able to choose Windows 11 or Linux, [according to Notebookcheck](https://www.notebookcheck.net/Made-in-USA-BlueChip-puts-Snapdragon-X-in-a-rugged-laptop.1435315.0.html?ref=skimwire.com).

"As of right now, the laptop's bill of materials is about 90% U.S. and allied, and we have a technical roadmap to get to 100% domestic over time," Luckey told TechCrunch. "I mean the displays. I mean the metallics. I mean the magnetics. All of it." He hasn't finished signing all his component suppliers yet.

## Why it matters

The U.S. has spent billions on domestic chip factories, but a finished computer also needs circuit boards, screens, batteries and dozens of small parts that are still made mostly in Asia. Anduril frames that gap as a national security risk: a conflict or supply shock could cut off the hardware government agencies run on. BlueChip's selling point is a supply chain buyers can trace and audit, which helps agencies that must buy American-made products.

It isn't meant for most people. Rugged laptops are heavier and give up battery life to survive rain and dust, and Luckey was blunt about the cost. "If I was just a normal consumer making a rational decision without a kind of patriotic basis, I'd be better off buying a Dell laptop than an Anduril laptop because it's going to be cheaper," he said. TechCrunch puts the rugged-computer market at about $5 billion.

For Qualcomm, it's another high-profile win for Arm-based Windows PCs, in a segment where compatibility with old government software matters. Anduril says it's working to make sure Windows apps and agency Linux tools run well.

## What's next

Anduril plans more BlueChip products using the same suppliers and processes, and interested organizations can [register on its site](https://www.anduril.com/bluechip?ref=skimwire.com). The test is whether the domestic share climbs from "90% U.S. and allied" toward Luckey's 100% before orders open.
